History File

This delightful restored Bentley S1 chassis number B97/ FD, engine number BF 373 and body number 4140 was delivered in August 1958 to Portland Motor Company, who subsequently sold the car to Lindsay Muir & Co registered with WAD 446. Changing hands quite quickly in 1959, this resplendent example, incredibly, stayed in the same family ownership until 2011 when the car was exported to Ireland where it finally underwent a comprehensive restoration. It received a full re-spray and was fitted with new Stainless Steel front and rear bumpers; all the woodwork was re-veneered and polished and the brightwork re-chromed. A new biscuit leather interior has been fitted with an Alcantara headlining and tailor-made carpets to match. The underside of the car was also cleaned and painted. The now showing 35,751 miles is believed to be a more appropriate 135,751 miles with the history file sadly being lost during the long term family ownership with now only a few invoices present prior to the restoration, but the quality of the finish will undoubtedly speak for itself.

Exterior – Our 1958 Bentley S1 carriage was completely resprayed in 2011 in Tudor grey metallic and sits with a horizontal dignity that is hard to match. At way over 5 meters in length, you do need to have your wits about you and judge obstacles accordingly in order to protect the newly fitted stainless steel front and rear bumpers. An impressive 3,538 vehicles were produced in Crew between 1955 and 1959 which, considering the level of quality, places these undervalued beauties well within the grasp of so many which, ironically, was not the initial intention. Buy now while you still can folks.

Interior – The quality of leather and indeed workmanship in the new biscuit interior is absolutely outstanding. Everyone should try and experience just once in their life being driven in one of these great carriages. It really is a wonderful experience, either driving or being driven; people just can’t help themselves and simply have to wave or offer a thumbs up. The quality alcantara headlining and matching biscuit carpet are a perfect match to the highly polished refurbished veneered finish. The interior is a sublime place to just sit back and indulge in historical luxury.

Engine & Transmission – This Crew built car offers a standard Bentley 4.9 Litre in-line straight six cylinder Powertrain. Carefully restored, it moves the almost 2 tonne Bentley along nicely with a progressive surge of power that can only be related to these great cars. Once used to the easy style power steering and height, the drive is impressive considering the car is from the 1950’s.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes – The seemingly massive Avon Turbospeed 235 80-15 and appropriately branded R/R-B tyres are all in good order. The restored chrome and Tudor grey wheel trims are contrasted by whitewall trims which can be removed, if so required.
