This particular car was delivered to a Mercedes dealership in Monchengladbach, Germany in November 1958 with the new owner taking delivery on the 13th of January 1959. One of just 830 Coupes ever produced, this model is even rarer with a factory ordered sunroof. Looking at the history file, the car appears to have spent some time in South Africa, before being imported to the UK by a Kings Lynne classic dealer. The previous Irish owner used the car as his daily driver and was regularly serviced by local specialist Pristine Classics who also carried out continued restoration work. Incredibly, the last owner used the car for over twenty years and was a common sight in Killarney in County Kerry. Now back in Germany, Cathedral Classics are delighted to bring this somewhat rare Mercedes to the market place.
Exterior
Originally leaving the factory in (396 dunkel blau) dark blue, this example was repainted in the early nineties with additional restoration work carried out in 2014 by Pristine Classics. Along with a new windscreen, all four wheel arches were treated to new metal, further enhancing the cars overall appearance. There is so much chrome on these models and all appears to be in a very presentable condition, enhanced by both bumpers being re-chromed in 2014.
Interior
The interior environment is wonderful: the quality of the seats from this period is astonishing and feels more ‘sofa’ like than car seats; the inventive factory option foldable rear bench seat is delightful. Further restoration improvements by the previous Irish owner include a new roof lining in 2014, along with all new wood and partial leather repairs. But undoubtedly the star of the show is the factory option steel sunroof.
Engine & Transmission
Somewhat advanced for the late 1950’s, the 2.2 Litre fuel injection OHC 6 cylinder engine is housed in a very tidy looking engine bay. Clearly very well maintained, it moves the 1.4 tonne’s along nicely. Once used to the 4 speed manual column shift, the car is an absolute joy to drive, but do be careful between first and reverse gears! Additional modern improvements are a 1, 2, 3 step electronic ignition.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The somewhat quirky 13” wheels are covered in quality Michelin 165/80 R13 tyres with plenty of tread remaining. Admittedly, a couple of the painted Star hubcaps are now showing signs of wear and tear. Once used to the drum brakes with a combination of power steering, the car is a delight to drive.
