History File

This genuine German Mönchengladbach supplied car spent its initial 5 years in Germany before finding a UK home in 1998. Close inspection of the neat history file shows French invoices indicating the car was perhaps used as a holiday cruiser. Not a bad piece of kit to use on holiday! Despite the continental use, the car had received a mile tachometer fitted which is confirmed by the numerous documented MOT certificates. Undeterred by our long legged cruisers LHD guise, it changes hands several times in the UK until finding a new home, ironically, back in Germany in early 2020. Now fitted again with an appropriate kilometer tachometer, the car has recently passed the stringent German TÜV system test and is ready for the glorious summer ahead.

Exterior

The distinctive lines of the W124 Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet are instantly recognisable and this E220 Cabriolet example is testament to this emerging design cult classic. Finished in desirable and optional Azurite blue metallic (Code 366U), the car displays an overall good finish and is free from the usual rust issues synonymous with so many examples. There are now a couple of time related marks but nothing to diminish the overall impression of the car. The electro-hydraulic black contrasting roof (code 9001) is fully insulated and is seamless in operation. Its ease of movement confirms why so many have commented on the cars over engineering qualities.

Interior

Opulance in abundance, the contoured seats trimmed in immaculate Beige Mushroom Leather (Code 265) are ergonomically designed for optimum comfort with lateral support and seat-suspension designed to harmonise with the vehicles actual suspension. This is a genuine 4 seater cabriolet with cabin space that can compete with any modern day equivalent. The fine wood veneer has a deep rich finish and looks as though it just left the factory. But the outstanding feature on this model is the electrically operated safety rear roll-over head restraints, which can be used when required. Special equipment ordered when new include: Front Centre Armrest (code 570) Heated Front Seats (code 873). Outstanding Mercedes Benz engineering.

Engine & Transmission

Fitted with the Mercedes four cylinder 16v unit of 2199cc displacement, the engine produces 150bhp at 5500rpm and 210Nm of torque at 4000rpm. A top speed of 128mph and 0-62 in 12.0 seconds is achieved effortlessly in this exceptionally well maintained example. The four speed automatic transmission operates exactly as the manufacturer intended with smooth changes and positive kick down.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The classic eight-hole Mercedes alloy wheels with a couple of time related marks are covered in Kumho 205/60 R15 tyres with ample even tread. The boot area houses the spare wheel alongside the original toolkit roll, jack, and warning triangle. Dual-circuit servo braking system with vacuum booster and anti-lock assistance (ABS) offers excellent straight line stopping power.
