Our nut and bolt TR4 restoration example was imported to Germany from the American dry state of South Carolina by a somewhat picky collector known to Cathedral Classics who was keen to start a new project. Happy that he had found a non-molested example and, importantly for his criteria, that all panels were matching, nothing welded and completely rust free, the long process would begin to produce what is clearly one of the very best examples available today. Now ready to be enjoyed again the car has recently passed the strict German re-registration process including full Historical registration. The pictures will speak for themselves and show an uncompromising, detailed restoration which the new owner should be delighted to show to the world.


Originally red, the car was completely stripped for a chassis off restoration in preparation for its new Old English White livery at a cost of over €7000. The finish is remarkable with all chrome elements renewed including the rather expensive boot-rack. Surrey Top – astonishingly, the actual Surrey Top itself (the vinyl insert and supporting frame) are both original equipment and a rare find indeed. The hardtop assembly, rear backlight and fiberglass top are reproduction parts. Incredibly versatile, the new owner will have essentially three options in one and, let’s not forget, the so called generic Targa (Porsche) option was not introduced to the world until 5 years after the TR4 option was available. The wee car was way ahead of its time!


Completely renewed to the cars original specification in lovely red leather with white piping and new black carpeting. The red leather is extended to new door cards and rear luggage section, again, all with matching white piping. Particular attention has been paid to finding an original steering wheel and an original centre console element. This is also quite a rare find, where so many examples are replaced with reproduction parts and fitted with radios. The car has also retained its original side windows.

Engine & Transmission

In keeping with the uncompromising detailed external restoration, our charming example has been mechanically completely overhauled to within an inch of its life. The engine itself has been fully stripped down and overhauled by a local specialist known to Cathedral Classics. An A Type transmission has been fitted by local Triumph and racing Guru Christof Forrel, with overdrive available on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. Modern touches include an upgraded alternator, electric fan and stainless steel exhaust. But the pictures will speak for themselves here where one can clearly see the level of work that’s been involved.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

Once again, originality was high in priority during the restoration and it was decided to stick with the cars factory delivered wheels now fully restored with original hub caps and, of course, new 165 HR15 86H Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres. New Girling front disc brakes have been added to completely overhauled rear drum brakes.
