History File

History File: It’s not very often that we can honestly say that we come across a genuine 1 owner, low kilometers, complete marque service history car, of any brand BUT, this is most certainly the case with our charming Audi 80 GLS 2 door example. Delivered to Frau Renate Frick in July 1978, it would remain in her hands for some 43 years; fastidiously maintained, the Kundendienst-Pass (service book) embraces no less than 17 service stamps confirming her commitment to the car and its remarkable survivor condition. Interestingly, as the car is sold in August 2021, a letter of correspondence from the local registration office, confirms that the owner received a replacement Fahrzeugbrief (registration document). With a recent service in February 2022, including a new timing belt, now clutch and rear exhaust, the car is now offered to the market with a full Audi NSU Auto Union book pack, two keys and an original Audi 80 period brochure. This is a rare survivor in an un-restored original condition and is one for the Audi memory banks. The strict German TÜV is valid until February 2024.

Exterior

Finished in Resedagrünmetallic L 95E/ X3 (Reseda green metallic) incredibly, with the exception of some areas on the roof and boot-lid, the remainder still wears its original factory coat of metallic paint. A tiny rust blemish at the rear right wheel arch (depicted), probably influenced by the GLS specification plastic (chrome like) wheel arch trim, is the only exterior blemish with the rest in astonishing condition. The unmarked, GLS specification bronze coloured tinted glass is as it left the factory and the glass halogen headlights are also in sound condition. Both front and rear chrome bumpers with rubber inserts are fine and have lasted the test of time. The car has clearly spent most of its life garaged and has been used sparingly in the wet.

Interior

It’s a ‘green’ environment typical of the 1970’s that would be hard to repeat, at any level. Commensurate with a 30k kilometer 44 year old interior, it is in immaculate condition. The two front Lindgrün (Lime green) cloth seats are now perhaps a little loose in terms of material but, are still in unmarked condition, as are both matching head restraints. The rear seats are like new. The contrasting brown PVC dashboard, centre console and door trim are all in perfect condition. In particular, the drivers top dash area, which usually deteriorates quite quickly, is perfect. Only the original gear lever gaiter and its inferior quality material, look perhaps out of place. All other plastic brown trim: door handles, window winders, seat adjusters, seat belt holders, glove box, dashboard controls are all in superb condition. In particular, the bottom door trim with matching green carpet is in in great order. Other GLS specification items such as the cigar lighter, interior glove box light, volt meter and engine control light are all working as they should.

Engine & Transmission

This front wheel drive car is powered by a 1.6 Litre engine offering 85ps / 63 kW unit with a combined 4 speed manual gearbox and an Audi recommended top speed of 110 km/h. In recent months the car has received a new clutch, timing belt, plugs and oil service and a new rear exhaust. Under the bonnet is in wonderful original condition with the bulkhead area plastic cover and coolant reservoir bottle both in like-new condition. The cardboard slide behind the front grill, offering a winter and summer mode air flow, is also in perfect condition. All of these sensitive mentioned items appear to have survived remarkably well. There is, however, a small area of rust now starting to appear just under the washer water bottle which is indicative of these models. It can be repaired, but it’s been consciously decided to present the car in its original unrestored condition.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The standard GLS centre hubcap wheels are covered with Audi (brochure recommended) correct 175/70 R13 tyre size, although, they are split between Michelin at the rear and Semperit at the front. The car brakes with ease and has passed the strict German TÜV roadworthiness test.
