GermanyHistory File
This first generation 1993 BMW 840i boasts just two enthusiast owners who have both technically and optically maintained this lovely original condition example. The first custodian, of some 26 years, ensured that the car wanted for nothing which is confirmed by the immaculate service book containing no less than 15 BMW service stamps. The second owner, from 2019, has continued the story with more than 5,000 euros invested in the maintenance and refreshment of technology. The car has always been dry stored and therefore has zero rust issues. From the torch in the glove compartment, which was included at delivery, to the coveted blue BMW cloth, which is so often lost from the fully equipped tool box, all the important details for any prospective collector are present in this unmolested example. The original on-board folder, including the service booklet, which has been maintained throughout, is present and depicted below. All invoices, from both owners, are also present and are also shown below, thus, a complete service history. The car has recently passed the German TÜV inspection in July 2022 and is eligible for Historical Registration status in December 2023. A recent insurance report and replacement valuation confirmed an amount of €61.700 and a Condition 1- (1 minus).
Exterior
The car is as proud as a peacock in its resplendent Oxford green metallic paint. This cherished example still wears its original factory coat of paint, but does now display a few expected bonnet and front valance stone chips. And with the exception of a small passenger door mirror chip (now repaired) the remainder of the paintwork is immaculate and has recently been treated with clear varnish sealant. The Klaus Kapitza design took almost a decade to come to fruition with BMW development going all the way to 1981 before its eventual launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989. The motor industry was simply stunned by its appearance.
Interior
The interior is dominated by the quality Nappa leather seats and almost aircraft cockpit -like centre-console. All the electronic displays, along with the electrically adjustable seats and sunroof, the automatic climate control and the rear sunblind, are all working perfectly. The second owner has recently had the on-board computer completely overhauled by a BMW specialist due to pixel errors. The first owner ordered a high level of specification which included the following options and standard equipment: ABS, ASR, airbag for driver and front passenger, on-board computer, original BMW Bavaria C Business Radio, electric side mirrors, electric seat adjustment with memory function, electric windows front and rear, leather steering wheel, fog lights, non-smoking vehicle, electric tilt/slide sunroof, heated seats, velour floor mats front and rear, ski bag, central locking with remote control. As with all BMW E31 models, the repair of the roof lining is sadly imminent, with the first small signs now visible near the sun visors on both the driver and passenger sides. It’s not overly offensive, but it is there.

Engine & Transmission
This 840i example with 5 speed automatic transmission and M60B40 engine, offers 210KW / 286 PS and 3982 cm3 displacement. As mentioned above, the BMW service book contains no less than 15 BMW service stamps, followed by 3 stamps by an 8 Series specialist, Andreas Wanke. The second owner had invested no less than €5000 to ensure he had the very best possible car available. This included a recent gearbox flush; a precautionary replacement of the valve cover seals; replacement of the engine bearings and cardan shaft; annual obligatory oil change; change of all operating fluids; replacement of all spark plugs. As a precaution, he has also taken steps to have the controversial oil pump screws permanently secured with thread-locker, ensuring a sump free screw environment.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The first owner did not scrimp when ordering the car to a high level of specification, which included the most expensive wheels available at the time – 17” Cross-Spoke alloys. Dunlop SP Sport 255/40 ZR 17 tyres adorn the rear, with smaller 235/45 ZR 17 at the front. The current tyres were fitted in January 2020 at 77,000 kilometers and still have plenty of quality tread remaining, with a potential review of the fronts in another 5-8000 kilometers. All sizes are of course entered in the cars current German documentation. The spare wheel and tyre have never been used.
