Lancia produced their elegant, second Flag-Ship Dedra model between 1989 and 1999 and managed to build over 400,000 units over the decade with the vast majority of them sold in Italy. Sadly, it wasn’t a great success outside of their home market, but their concept was clear, if not challenging, as they targeted those who wished to buy an elegant, medium-sized saloon but didn’t want to fork-out for executive car money. These were undoubtedly impressive small cars for the period with an emphasis on comfort, ergonomics and an optimal driving position and, with typical Lancia flare, a use of high quality interior materials such as Alcantara. This particular example was initially registered in Germany on the 9th of January 1991 and would remain with its enthusiastic 1st owner for 27 years. Move forward to 2018, and for age related issues, the car is sold to its second owner who would hold the car for a just one year. Realising it simply wasn’t – for him – it is sold in 2019 to a prominent Lancia Club Deutschland member who added it to his small Italian collection. The car has clearly been extremely well maintained by Lancia enthusiasts for over 30 years and is now eligible for Historical registration in Germany for any new potential owner. All in all, it’s a cracking little car for any Italian enthusiast with a smaller budget, and a car that can be driven on a daily basis with comfort and style. All the original books are still with the car with two sets of keys and all neatly presented in an A4 file with plenty of invoices to confirm the above kilometers. The car has a current German TÜV until July 2023. Dare to be different…!


Lancia’s goal for the Dedra model was a high level of specification which included special paint colours; this discrete Lancia Bordeaux Metallic paint with code number (167) is no exception and presents well. After thirty years of driving and several age related stone chips, the front end has now been completely refreshed by the last owner. Moving back from the front doors, the roof and all other panels are still original factory paint. The sensitive mirrors casings (common to almost all Dedras) have also recently received new paint too. The B pillars on both sides now show some light plastic deterioration which is also common in many Lancia models and is depicted accordingly. But generally speaking it is a very well presented car.


Deluxe light grey Alcantara cover the well bolstered seats and head-restraints and extend to the headlining which incorporates an electric tilt/slide glass sunroof with alcantara sunblind. Sadly, the sensitive material is now showing ware on the entry panel to the driver’s side, but one could carefully live with it. The driving position is superb and is assisted with electric mirrors and a 4 way manual adjustable driver’s seat with rake adjustable steering wheel. Lancia aficionados will note the face-lift dashboard which gives neat ergonomics for the period with exception of the ridiculously well-hidden original Grundig 2632 VD auto reverse radio cassette. Key central locking, electric windows and rear twin sunblinds all add to this nice early 1990’s package. The boot area is adequate with a shallow entry with the underside of the boot lid still bearing its original factory stickers.

Engine & Transmission

Lancia offered an incredible 12 engine variations over its 10 year tenure for the Dedra. The Phase One cars (1989 – 1993) offered 8 options with this particular example being a 2.0 i.e. Cat with 117ps (86 kW) and 1,995 cc. It’s a keen 8 valve version that offers sprightly acceleration and honest efficiency. In recent months the last owner has had the engine completely re-sealed and serviced including a new battery and has also obtained a catalytic Euro 2 classification which, ironically, offers a lower tax bracket than Historical Registration. Under the bonnet presents very well and still displays its original factory specification stickers, but the top struts are now showing a tiny bit of surface rust, but nothing to be alarmed about.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The standard factory wheels had sadly perished beyond repair and were recently replaced with accessory 7 spoke alloy wheels which suit the car well. New Hankook Kinergy-45 195/50 R15 tyres were purchased at the same time so there is plenty of tread. The last owner has also recently replaced the rear wheel bearings whist completing a brake overhaul.
