To celebrate the end of an era this Mini Cooper Sport Special Edition was initially registered in December 2000 to a discerning German customer who, following a mere 500 kilometers, laid it down like a good bottle of red wine. Unfortunately, the result was not quite the same, as the proverbial ‘cellar’ used was subjected to the outside elements for almost a decade. Eventually used some ten years later to get to its current kilometers (still not that much) it clearly did not receive the care it perhaps deserved. Rescued, one could argue, by a well-known previous Rover/Mini dealer, it was subjected to a frame-off, nut and bolt three year restoration, culminating in the sweet little number we see today. Many parts were renewed with those that are no longer available, carefully refurbished to the highest standard.
Exterior
Finished in metallic Tahiti Blue colour code: BLVC965/JRJ with metallic silver body stripes, mirrors and roof, it’s a cracking finish and suits the wee car very well. This was a frame off re-paint, with no stone unturned, displaying an almost like new shine. Wide wheel arches and appropriate spots and fogs adorn the slim front bumper and give it an aggressive but sporty stance. Following the lengthy restoration the car received a complete cavity preservation sealing.
Interior
A lot of work has gone into the interior which is where most of the deterioration had taken place. Seat frames have been restored and covered with new silver and black leather seat covers with matching head restraints. New black carpets throughout along with new fitted over-mats and new headlining, give it a fresh feel, despite being over 20 years old. The silver dashboard and contrasting white dials are typical for the period and display an accurate 23,878 kilometer’s. Additional silver door handles and window winders match the dominant silver gear-knob. Staying with authenticity, it was decided to retain the original Mini Cooper logoed black and silver steering wheel containing its factory SRS Airbag. This is a classic (in the true sense of the word) Mini environment that will not fail to make you smile…
Engine & Transmission
Lifting the tiny bonnet, it is easy to see that the engine has received a complete nut and bolt overhaul. It’s an immaculate environment and will impress any Mini enthusiast. All fluids have of course been changed with new seals throughout and, where necessary, all worn engine parts have been replaced. A recent service has brought the car back to life and is now ready to be enjoyed – again! The below images of the cars underside confirm the extent of the fantastic work carried out by our Mini Specialist in Apen, Germany.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The restored 13” Minilite wheels are covered with new 175/50 R13 Nankang tyres. A complete brake overhaul was completed during the restoration, and it is easy to glance beneath to see the quality of the work carried out.
